Read this morning in The Voice Bible, Ephesians 2:10 and thought you just might smile with this one. “ For we are the product of His hand, Heaven’s poetry etched on lives, created in the Anointed, Jesus, to accomplish the good works God arranged long ago.” As I am also returning to writing poetry in this leg of my journey, I find it so amazing that the comfort and vulnerability poetry can bring to the whole human spectrum is indeed just what we need in this age and hour we are living in. Thanks for being a pioneer in this re-emerging art of living and being. Just what our world needs right now.
“It’s not my song to sing their songs. I have my own songs to sing. My work is to sing anyway. Sing anyway!” Reminds me of a song sung many moons ago on Sesame Street I would sing to my wee little granddaughters they still remember, “Sing, sing a song, sing out loud, sing out strong… don’t worry bout if it’s good enough, for anyone else to hear, just sing, sing a song…”🎶 - makes me smile every time! I still sing it. So yes, sing anyway and watch the wild goose fly over you. The Celtics referred to the wild goose as Holy Spirit. Never knew which way he would come or go! What a whimsical adventure you are on my friend! Sing away!
Steve, I love the picture you took of the geese and connecting it with our "flocking" together. In your poem I esp liked the lines: "My work is to listen, to notice and to write...my work is to sing." In tuning out the committee meeting in your head, you can tune into the song of the Catbird that draws out your own unique song for the world to hear.
“….too many voices are speaking….mentor me with your Great Voice from beyond.”
These two lines (from different stanzas of the poem) connected for me and really resonated! I’ve intentionally shed a lot of voices that were previously prominent in my life, but no longer spoke life-giving language for me- both external voices and internal. And I’ve also been more intentional in shedding a lot of the distracting and disturbing noise of the news, social media, culture war-ing, and other things in general that I found were damaging my soul- or at least keeping me stuck in distraction or despair. For the last few weeks I felt a need to even hit pause on some of the voices I find life-giving through podcasts, books, substacks, and the like- it all just can feel like too much sometimes. I needed more quiet and a break from the grind of information and noise to focus on tuning in to the “Great Voice from beyond.” Getting ready to reengage with some of those life-giving voices again, but I’m thankful for a sense of freedom and okayness in just listening for that Great Voice alone in certain seasons- and to know that it is enough!

Profound wisdom you’re quoting from Sesame Street! I love it and your thoughtful integrating comment! Thank you!

Steve, your words, your poem, the pictures and the comments above from “fellow flockers” encourage and make me SMILE!
This poem is DEFINITELY a “keeper” to include in your anthology! :)
I’m glad you smiled!
