Gwen and I found a section of the river that we had not yet explored. It became a respite for me. Everything we needed was there as if the river was waiting on us.
Water is often a threshold—a new beginning—a place that seems to take you somewhere far, far away.
As I wrote this poem I thought of the lyrics to the old hymn many of us have sung: “Shall we gather at the river…”
What a beautiful invitation!
In recent weeks, I’ve felt the swirls of too much whitewater—too fast—too much—too loud. So, writing this particular poem is the way I anchored the image we saw and experienced. Imagining some of the lines in this poem from how I remember that section of the river…yet feeling the longing rise up within me for the peace of a river—the shining threshold of encounter. For me, the shining threshold was to find some moments of tranquility and peace and to share this moment together.
Hope you will enjoy and meet me at the river one day soon!
