Pain Sucks!
A Hybrid Substack with theology, disappointment, reality, and two good days of low pain for Gwen. And oh, yeah, my poem "Pain Sucks!"
Substack has become more than a place for me to write my poems. It is a hybrid space of a newsletter/Caring Bridge and updates I want to share with my friends but am too tired and spent these days as a Caregiver to answer the texts and inquiries. I think most of you can understand.
It’s been a long, long span of time for Gwen’s recovery. We are shy of four weeks ‘post op’ from a “Total Reverse Shoulder Replacement” for her. Yes, that is her actual xray post surgery. Kind of helps one to get perspective, right?
What’s becoming more clear is that we lacked the “patient information” I wish we could have gotten. That’s when someone in the “know” sits you down and strips away the illusions that this is a cake-walk. This is not cake-walk. (Sorry if you don’t know what that is).
At this point, I would have preferred the truth—-the conversation that would have said, “Clear your calendar. Cancel anything you have planned. Healing is your only journey and hopefully your only destination.”
